The Competition

Last Saturday, Kayti had her first dance competition of the season. Although she is no stranger to competing in front of a crowd, this was her first opportunity to do so with dance instead of gymnastics. Competing in dance is a bit different than gymnastics. In gym, you are really competing as an individual. Each gymnast's score is complied for a team score, but the main point of gym is compete your best as an individual, even if that means trying to beat your best friend from the same gym. In dance, there is no individual (save for the solo dances, but she isn't doing that yet). It is solely a team effort. I think she likes this better. Knowing that people are counting on her to be there, to do her best, to win or to lose together.
Saturday morning we had to be up early. Too early for a Saturday; 5:30 am early. Then, we had to drive 1.5 hours to Spanish Fork for the competition. Kayti's dance studio has 5 comp teams that were participating. We taped the two that Kayti performed in. The first one was her jazz dance. It is the same dance that I have on a previous post. She is still in the right hand corner of the screen in the second row. Just like before, please scroll to the bottom to stop the playlist before trying to watch the videos.

The second video is what is called her production number. It encorporates all of the comp dance teams into one performance. This is about 12 minutes long or so and is a really cool dance! Kayti is one of the bad guys that comes out towards the end of the number. She dances to Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" and is on the left hand side of the screen, back row with a chair. After she is finished with the chair she moves to the front row all the way to the left, right at edge of the screen.

The team did AWESOME! Each of the individual dance groups and the production number took 1st place and the studio also took 1st overall. Kayti's jazz dance also won 1st place for best technique/choreography.

She was on the fence about trying out again for next year. Not so much anymore..she is sure she is trying out again! It doesn't matter to us if she does or doesn't, as long as she is happy with what she is doing. It sure seemed like she was on Saturday!

Soccer games start Saturday. Stay tuned to see Keeli in action!

They look awesome. Hopefully I can make it to the next one. I can't wait to see them at the Year End Revue.
